French Onion Soup
Caramelized onions in a rich beef broth topped with a piece of crunchy garlic toast and shredded cheese!
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 3 lg. onions peeled and sliced
- 2 T. butter or margarine
- 2 (10 ½ oz.) cans condensed beef broth
- 21 oz. water (2 soup cans)
- 1 T. A-1 steak sauce
- 4 slices garlic toast or 1 c. croutons
- 1 c. shredded Mozzarella, Provolone, or Swiss cheese divided among bowls
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté onions in butter for about 15 minutes or until golden brown and caramelized, stirring frequently.
- Add beef broth, 2 soup cans water, and steak sauce. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer over medium-low for 5 minutes.
- Preheat oven to broil.
- Ladle soup into 4 large ovenproof bowls, top with a piece of garlic toast or seasoned croutons and shredded cheese. Broil 2 to 3 minutes, until cheese is melted. Now devour!
Notes
Cook's Note: To avoid crying while peeling or slicing onions, just chill them in the freezer for 10 to 15 min. before slicing or peel the onions under cold running water.
