  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the whisk attachment, beat butter on high speed until the butter has lightened in color and is thoroughly whipped.
  2. On low speed, add 2 cups confectioners’ sugar and salt; beat until blended.
  3. Add milk and extract; beat until blended.
  4. Add remaining confectioners’ sugar 1 cup at a time; beating until incorporated. Turn mixer to high speed and beat frosting until light and fluffy.
  5. Add more milk or cream as needed if the mixture becomes too thick or dry.
  6. The frosting will keep for 1 month in the freezer, 2 weeks in the refrigerator, or 3 days at room temperature.
